When we think of home support, the very name of it conjures up assisting someone to remain independent at home. Many home support services focus on this need, and the best care plans and services provide this support for elderly people at an entry level. However, home support providers may also provide care away from home. Managing activities that are not delivered at home, and often to a group, presents its own special set of challenges. What can you do to ensure you stay on top of things?
For services at home, we tend to think of what are the services, when are they being delivered, how often, how long and who by. Once these services start, it’s good planning to think about how these may change in future, and how you will manage these changes in documentation, reporting and changes to the client contribution.
Furthermore, many home support providers provide care which is, strange to others outside the industry, not at home. They may take clients on trips or outings, have them come in for overnight respite or just the day, or offer a range of activities and services at a centre.
Managing activities that are not delivered at home, and often to a group, presents its own special set of challenges. It’s simple if there is a single activity that is everyone is participating in for a fixed time.
But what if a few participants need a pick up or drop off to the activity? What if there is always one person who brings their own meal instead of having (and paying for) the provided meal? What if another person always leaves early?
The simplest way to manage this is undoubtedly an old-fashioned attendance sheet and clipboard. As we know, as home support becomes more sophisticated and requires more reporting, it can be a smart forward-thinking move to consider how your group activity planning and management can be improved. The best solutions will always take the advantages of traditional methods and build on them even further, giving you more insight and ease in managing your group activities.
Finally, consider how your solution will manage a client who has both at-home individual and group activities. This is home support “with the lot”, both home and away, for individuals and for groups. At any one time, a bit like seeing the same problem from different angles, you may need to see your individual care plan, your group schedule, your individual agreement, your group client contribution, or any combination. You may also need to make changes to one element at a time.
When thinking about how best to manage home support and be prepared for future changes, big and small, remember the breadth and depth of home support – both home and away, for individuals and groups.
