Jenny Burley [e-Tools State Manager VIC/TAS/SA] and I attended the LASA Community and Home Care (Vic) Seminar yesterday at Leonda’s in Melbourne. e-Tools was the Gold Sponsor for the event and we met with many attendees looking for a “user friendly, cost-effective” software solution.

LASA Victoria provided an excellent forum that shared contemporary information and facilitated the exchange of ideas on home care and home support.  The attendees were enthusiastic about the information and presenters.  They also enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with other industry colleagues to jointly benefit from both their current experiences and how the new changes will impact going forward.

The home care and home support sections of the industry are being exposed to a higher level of accountability and regulation which is a considerable change and transition for them as this has not been their experience in the past.  The general tenor of the day indicated a willingness to engage and consider the opportunities the new changes offered, along with reflection on whether current practices, market positioning, size of operation, product and service offerings were all entirely suitable for the new future for “community based” care.

There is no doubt however this is the area that will be subject to significant growth in both supported as well as self-funded service models.  Equally, it needs to be acknowledged that providers will not compete on systems, compliance and documentation, rather on consumer satisfaction, communication, marketing, pricing and product/service offering.  As such, sharing information and choosing systems that are common in the industry is not a disadvantage but can in fact assist providers with efficiency and cost saving.

Home care and home support operators appeared to have a very open mind about the opportunities and recognise that the relationship with consumers will change significantly. Also, whilst they may in part be in a more competitive environment with their colleagues there was a potentially more significant threat and that is from new providers not yet in the industry or from within their owns "brokered service" providers who could become the primary supplier of their services.

The most telling issues confronting the sector are time and change management to get current system and in particular staff ready for the new market place.  Most providers also recognised that they will need to review computer systems to meet growing departmental requirements for accountability and reporting.
