NEWS: Mistakes…We all make them, but let’s treat them as stepping stones to learning

In a heavily compliant driven industry like aged care, technology can make a real difference in reducing human error and easing the burden on staff. What are the top three common mistakes when it comes to technology and software usage, and what are the ways to overcome these mistakes?

Mistakes happen. Sometimes they are big and sometimes they are small. Of course not all mistakes are detrimental or bad. In fact, many inventions around the world are a result of someone making a mistake. A strange one I know, but I recently discovered that fireworks were accidentally discovered 2000 years ago by a Chinese cook messing around with charcoal, sulphur and saltpeter in a bamboo tube. Not sure what type of delicacy he was trying to create in his kitchen exactly, but he sure did end up with a big bang! I mean, where would the world be without fireworks? News Year’s Eve just wouldn’t be the same.

Obviously we don’t want to create a firework type of explosion when we make a mistake in the workplace, especially if that mistake puts our business at risk financially or of non-compliance. But the fact is, human error is inevitable. Mistakes have happened in the past and they will continue to happen into the future. The trick is to learn from our mistakes and to try and figure out how we can reduce them.

In a heavily compliant driven industry like aged care, technology can make a real difference in reducing human error and easing the burden on staff. Software solutions decrease your daily manual tasks by centralising all your data to automise your processes and increase productivity. It can also be a powerful tool for data management and reporting.

No matter how far technology has come along, remember, mistakes are bound to happen. The top three commonly made mistakes are: investing in a software solution that does not meet your needs, the incorrect use of the software due to lack of training and incorrect data entry.

To overcome these mistakes, have a clear understanding of your needs and research your software options thoroughly. Post-purchase, you need to have the correct data for the initial setup, ensure your staff members undergo proper and continuous training to make certain they are using the software to its best abilities.
